Every engine is designed to hold a specific quantity of oil, and getting it right is more important than people think. Put in too little and the pump can draw in air, breaking the oil film that keeps the crankshaft and bearings from touching metal-to-metal — and on hard cornering or braking the pickup can be momentarily uncovered. Put in too much and the spinning crankshaft dips into the oil and whips it into foam; aerated oil can’t carry load or heat, and the extra pressure can push past seals and gaskets.

That is why this converter exists: the figure in your owner’s manual might be in quarts, the bottle on the shelf in litres, and an older workshop chart in imperial gallons. Mixing up a US gallon (3.785 L) and an imperial gallon (4.546 L) — a 20% difference — is an easy and costly mistake. Convert to a common unit, fill to the stated capacity, and always confirm with the dipstick, aiming for the upper mark and never above it.
