When does ovulation actually happen?
Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period, regardless of how long your cycle is — it's the luteal (post-ovulation) phase that's most consistent, not the follicular phase. So in a 28-day cycle ovulation falls near day 14, but in a 32-day cycle it's closer to day 18. This calculator works backward from your expected next period to estimate that day.
What is the fertile window and why is it six days?
The fertile window is the span of days when intercourse can lead to pregnancy. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about five days, and the egg is viable for roughly 12–24 hours after release. That gives a window of about five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation — six days total, with the highest chance in the two to three days right before and including ovulation.
How accurate is calendar-based ovulation prediction?
Calendar estimates are a useful starting point but only an approximation. They assume regular cycles and a fixed luteal phase, which not everyone has. For more precise timing, many people combine the calendar method with basal body temperature tracking, cervical mucus observation, or ovulation predictor kits that detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge.
My cycles are irregular — can I still use this?
You can, but treat the result as a rough guide rather than a firm date. Irregular cycles make the timing of ovulation harder to predict from the calendar alone.
