What is the difference between plywood and OSB?
Both come in the same 4×8 sheet sizes and install the same way, so the count is identical. OSB (oriented strand board) is usually cheaper and common for roof and wall sheathing, while plywood resists moisture and holds fasteners a bit better and is often chosen for subfloors. Just enter the price of whichever you are buying.
How much waste should I plan for?
Plan on about 10% for a simple rectangular area with few obstructions and 15% or more for cut-up roofs, walls with many openings, or diagonal work. Staggered seams and offcuts you cannot reuse add up, so rounding up to whole sheets and keeping a little extra protects against a return trip.
Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?
Longer 4×12 sheets cover more per piece and create fewer seams, which speeds up large floors, walls, and roofs — but they are heavier and harder to handle solo and may not fit in a small vehicle. Standard 4×8 sheets are easier to carry and waste less on smaller jobs. The tool lets you compare both.
Does this account for the thickness I need?
No — thickness is a structural choice, not part of the area math. Subfloors commonly use 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove, wall sheathing 7/16 or 1/2 inch, and roof sheathing 1/2 to 5/8 inch depending on rafter spacing. The sheet count is the same regardless; pick thickness to match your span and local code.
