Steps Calculator: Steps to Distance & Calories
Turn steps into distance, walking time and calories, or a distance into steps, from your height or a measured step length — with walking MET values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities.
How to Use
- Choose Steps → distance, Distance → steps or Time → steps for a walk of a set length of time.
- Enter your height (cm, m, inches, or feet and inches such as 5'10") and sex for an estimated step length — or switch to a step length you measured.
- Enter your steps, the distance or the minutes walked, and your cadence in steps per minute (count your steps for one minute; the page starts at 100).
- Add your weight for calories. The page picks the 2024 Compendium walking code from your speed, or you can choose an activity such as walking the dog.
- Read the distance, time and calories, see your steps against the 5,000 / 7,500 / 10,000 reference counts, and check Show Work for each step.
Worked Example
10,000 steps for a 175 cm man. Estimated step length: 0.415 × 175 cm = 72.6 cm. Distance: 10,000 × 0.72625 m = 7,262.5 m = 7.26 km, or 4.51 miles. At 100 steps a minute that takes 100 minutes (1 h 40 min), at 0.72625 × 100 = 72.6 m/min = 4.36 km/h = 2.71 mph.
Calories. 2.71 mph falls under the 2024 Compendium’s code 17170, “Walking, 2.5 mph, firm, level surface”, at 3.0 MET. One MET is 1 kcal per kg per hour, so a 70 kg walker uses 3.0 × 70 × 1.667 h = 350 kcal; (3.0 − 1) × 70 × 1.667 = 233 kcal of that is above what sitting still would use.

A pedometer counts single steps, heel to heel. Measuring two steps (one full stride of the same foot) as one doubles the step length, and 10,000 steps of 145 cm become a wildly long 14.5 km. Measure 20 normal walking steps and divide.

Where 10,000 Steps Came From
The 10,000-step target did not start in a laboratory. In their 2004 review “How many steps/day are enough?” in Sports Medicine, Catrine Tudor-Locke and David Bassett traced it to Japanese walking clubs and a business slogan more than 30 years earlier. They proposed rough bands for healthy adults: under 5,000 steps a day as a “sedentary lifestyle index”, 5,000–7,499 as “low active”, 7,500–9,999 as “somewhat active”, 10,000 or more as “active” and over 12,500 as “highly active”.
Later studies tested the number against health outcomes. I-Min Lee and colleagues followed 16,741 women with an average age of 72 who wore step counters for a week; death rates fell as daily steps rose up to about 7,500, then levelled off (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2019). A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 cohorts and 47,471 adults led by Amanda Paluch (Lancet Public Health) found risk kept falling up to 6,000–8,000 steps a day for people aged 60 and over, and up to 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.
The calories here use MET values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities (Herrmann et al., Journal of Sport and Health Science, 2024), which lists measured energy costs for hundreds of activities. Its walking codes are tied to speed bands, so the page works out your speed from step length and cadence and picks the matching code.
About This Tool
This calculator converts between steps, distance and time in either direction, estimates step length from height (accepting cm, metres, inches or feet and inches) or uses one you measured, and turns the walk into calories with the 2024 Compendium MET value for your speed or an activity you choose. It shows the total and the part above resting, and places your step count against the reference numbers from the studies above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is 10,000 steps?
It depends on your step length. With the common estimate of 0.415 × height for men, a 175 cm man takes 72.6 cm steps, so 10,000 steps is 7.26 km (4.51 miles). A 5 ft 4 in woman (0.413 × 162.56 cm = 67.1 cm) covers 6.71 km (4.17 miles).
How many steps are in a mile?
Divide 1,609.344 m by your step length. A 5 ft 10 in man (73.8 cm steps) takes about 2,181 steps per mile; a 5 ft 4 in woman (67.1 cm) takes about 2,397.
How many calories does walking 10,000 steps burn?
For a 70 kg, 175 cm man at 100 steps a minute: 10,000 steps take 1 h 40 min at 2.71 mph, which the 2024 Compendium codes as 3.0 MET (walking, 2.5 mph). 3.0 × 70 kg × 1.667 h = 350 kcal in total, of which 233 kcal is above resting.
Where does the 10,000-steps goal come from?
Tudor-Locke and Bassett (Sports Medicine, 2004) traced it to Japanese walking clubs and a business slogan from more than 30 years earlier — not to a study. Later research found benefits at lower counts: in older women, death risk fell with steps up to about 7,500 a day (Lee et al. 2019).
How do I measure my step length?
Walk normally over a measured distance and count the steps, then divide. 15 m in 20 steps is 75 cm per step. Use that in Measured step length; it beats any height-based estimate.
How do I use the Steps Calculator: Steps to Distance & Calories?
Just type your numbers. The answer shows up right away — there is no button to press. Change anything and it updates by itself.
Is it free? Does it work without internet?
Yes to both. It is free with no sign-up, and once the page has loaded it keeps working even with no internet.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere — every calculation runs on your own device. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
Common Use Cases
Reading a pedometer
7,500 steps for a 5 ft 4 in woman is 5.04 km (3.13 miles) and 1 h 15 min at 100 steps a minute.
Steps for a 5K walk
A 180 cm man needs about 6,693 steps to cover 5 km; at 110 steps a minute that is 1 h 00 min and 308 kcal at 80 kg.
A 30-minute walk
30 minutes at 110 steps a minute is 3,300 steps — 2.25 km for a 165 cm woman, and 90 kcal at 60 kg.
Walking the dog
8,000 steps of 75 cm is 6.00 km; the Compendium rates walking the dog at 3.0 MET, so 300 kcal for a 75 kg walker.
Steps in a mile
A 5 ft 10 in man takes about 2,181 steps per mile, which is 21 min 49 s at 100 steps a minute.
