Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross by 1 plus the rate, not by the rate itself — that is the common mistake. At 20% VAT, the net is gross / 1.20, and the VAT is the difference. So a £120 inclusive price is £100 net plus £20 VAT. Selecting remove mode does this division for you automatically.

What VAT rates apply across the UK and EU?

The UK standard rate is 20%, with a 5% reduced rate and 0% on zero-rated goods. EU standard rates vary by country — for example 19% in Germany, 21% in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, and 25% in Denmark and Sweden. Each country also has reduced rates for specific categories, so use the rate that applies to your transaction.

What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?

VAT is collected in stages at each step of the supply chain and is normally shown inclusive of the displayed price in the UK and EU. US-style sales tax is charged only at the final sale and is usually added on at checkout. If you are in the US, the Sales Tax calculator is the right tool.

Can businesses reclaim the VAT they pay?

VAT-registered businesses can generally reclaim the VAT they pay on eligible purchases (input VAT) and offset it against the VAT they charge customers (output VAT), remitting the difference. Rules, thresholds, and exemptions differ by country. This calculator does the arithmetic; it is an estimate, not tax or accounting advice.

Does a 0% rate mean no VAT records are needed?

Not necessarily. Zero-rated supplies are still taxable at 0%, and businesses usually must record them and may reclaim related input VAT, unlike exempt supplies. The distinction matters for compliance, so check your local rules — but for the math, a 0% rate simply leaves net and gross equal.

How do I use the VAT Calculator?

Just type your numbers. The answer shows up right away — there is no button to press. Change anything and it updates by itself.

Is it free? Does it work without internet?

Yes to both. It is free with no sign-up, and once the page has loaded it keeps working even with no internet.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere — every calculation runs on your own device. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
