ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
What does "ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS" mean?
Shown by the browser after roughly 20 redirects in a row. Each response pointed somewhere that redirected again — often back to where it started — so the page never loads. It typically appears right after an HTTPS, www or CDN change.
What causes "ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS"?
- A redirect rule points back to itself (e.g. HTTP→HTTPS that loops).
- Conflicting redirects between app, CDN, and server.
- A cookie/auth check that always redirects.
How do I confirm the cause?
- Run curl -IL https://yoursite.example and read the chain of Location headers to see where it loops.
- Check for two layers both forcing HTTPS — for example a CDN talking to your server over plain HTTP while the server redirects every HTTP request.
- Try a private window. If it works there, a cookie (often a login or language cookie) is driving the loop.
How do I fix "ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS"?
- Clear cookies for the site and retry.
- Trace the redirect chain (curl -IL) to find the loop.
- Fix the rule that sends the URL back to itself.
How do I stop it happening again?
- Do each redirect (HTTPS, www, trailing slash) in exactly one layer, and test the chain with curl after every change.
- Behind a proxy or CDN, check the X-Forwarded-Proto header before redirecting to HTTPS instead of looking at the raw scheme.
