Frequently Asked Questions

When does this tool work well?

When the original photo has a solid, evenly-lit background — studio product shots on white seamless paper, ID-style portraits on plain backgrounds, headshots against a single-color wall. The cleaner and more uniform the original background, the cleaner the replacement.

When does it not work?

Photos with complex, textured, or gradient backgrounds. Photos where the subject contains the same color as the background (a person wearing white in front of a white wall). For complex cases, use AI-based background removal (remove.bg, Photoshop's Remove Background) for better results.

What's the difference vs. Chroma Key?

Both swap backgrounds. Chroma Key is optimized for video-production green/blue screen workflows — tighter color thresholds, despill controls. Background Replace is more flexible — any solid color, any new background (color or image). Use Chroma Key for proper studio chroma footage; use Background Replace for general studio photography.

Why are my edges messy?

Anti-aliased edges (the gradual transition between subject and background) can produce halo or fringe artifacts. Solutions: (1) increase tolerance to capture more transition shades; (2) increase feathering for softer edges; (3) for complex subjects with hair or fur, use a more sophisticated tool with edge refinement.

Can I use a photo as the new background?

Yes — drop or upload an image as the new background. The subject is composited over the background image at full resolution. The new background image is automatically scaled to match the subject's dimensions.

Are images uploaded?

No. Background replacement happens entirely in your browser using HTML5 canvas. Subject and replacement images are processed locally — useful for sensitive content like ID photos or product proofs.
