Where do the rates come from?
frankfurter.app (European Central Bank reference rates, updated daily ~16:00 CET). open.er-api.com is the fallback. Both are free and ping anonymously from your browser.
Is this real-time?
Daily interbank reference rates. Good for general use. Use a paid FX feed for trading-grade real-time.
What about exchange spreads?
Banks and fintech apps add 1-3% on top. Divide the real rate by 1.02 for a realistic consumer quote.
