How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade maps to grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, …). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get <strong>quality points</strong>, add those up, and divide by the total credit hours: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Courses with more credits pull the GPA more strongly.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
<strong>Unweighted</strong> GPA treats every course on the same 4.0 scale. <strong>Weighted</strong> GPA gives harder courses a bonus — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. This tool shows both; the weighted number can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate to unweighted, so it's useful to know each.
How do I find my cumulative GPA?
Enter your prior cumulative GPA and the number of credits it covers. The calculator weights the old GPA by its credits, adds this term's quality points, and divides by the new total: cumulative = (priorGPA × priorCredits + termPoints) ÷ (priorCredits + termCredits). It's a credit-weighted average, not a simple average of the two GPAs.
Do Pass/Fail and Withdrawn courses affect GPA?
Generally no. A <strong>Pass (P)</strong> earns credit toward graduation but carries no grade points, so it's excluded from the GPA. <strong>No-Pass (NP)</strong>, <strong>Withdraw (W)</strong> and <strong>Incomplete (I)</strong> are also left out of the GPA. This tool excludes all of them from the GPA math (and counts P toward earned credits).
Is A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?
It depends on the school. Most use a flat 4.0 scale where A and A+ are both 4.0 — that's the default here. Some colleges award 4.3 for an A+ (which lets a GPA edge above 4.0). Use the “A+ = 4.3” toggle to match your school's policy.
What GPA do I need for the Dean's List?
It varies, but a 3.5+ term GPA is a common threshold for the Dean's List, and 3.9+ for the highest honors (President's List). Below 2.0 typically means academic probation. This tool labels your standing automatically, but check your institution's exact cut-offs.
