History of Towing Ratings

Manufacturer tow ratings became standardized with SAE J2807 in 2013, giving buyers a uniform way to compare capacities across brands. Before J2807, each manufacturer ran their own tests — Ford's "maximum tow" might assume different hill grades, ambient temperatures, and test loads than Chevy's, leading to absurd marketing-number inflation. Post-J2807, a 12,000 lb-rated F-150 and a 12,000 lb-rated Silverado have actually been tested under the same conditions.

J2807 tests include a 12% grade launch, 0-30 mph pass on a grade, trailer brake drag, and a trailer-sway evaluation. The tow vehicle must maintain 40 mph up a 12% grade with the trailer attached — a surprisingly hard requirement that many pre-2013 half-ton trucks couldn't meet at their marketing "tow ratings." Class 8 commercial tractors don't use J2807 (they have separate FMVSS and DOT testing) but pickups and SUVs do.

Tongue weight (10-15% of trailer weight) is the critical stability parameter. Too light and the trailer sways uncontrollably in crosswinds or passing trucks; too heavy and the tow vehicle's front end lifts, reducing steering authority and braking. Weight-distribution hitches (WDH) redistribute tongue weight to the trailer axles and front wheels, allowing higher trailer weights without nose-dive.

A 2022 F-150 XL regular cab with the 3.3L V6 is rated for 8,200 lb; the same year's F-150 Tremor with the 5.0L V8 and Max Tow package handles 14,000 lb.
