Worked Example

SAT to ACT. Find 1240 in Table A1 of the 2018 concordance: it reads 26. SAT scores of 1230, 1240 and 1250 all give 26, and Table A2 names 1240 as the single SAT score for a 26. With the guide’s standard error of about 2 ACT points, the typical range is 24–28.

ACT to SAT. A 30 ACT Composite is SAT 1370 in Table A2, with the range 1360–1380. The standard error on that side is about 80 SAT points, so 1290–1450.

The common mistake: scaling by the maximum. 1240 ÷ 1600 × 36 = 27.9, which rounds to 28. The official table says 26. The two tests do not spread students out the same way, so the concordance matches scores by percentile rank, not by the share of the maximum.

Reading and writing. The ACT side of that table is English + Reading added together (2 to 72). An ACT English 30 and Reading 30 is 60, which Table C2 matches to SAT ERW 670.

Where the Tables Come From

The College Board and ACT, Inc. published the current tables together in the Guide to the 2018 ACT/SAT Concordance, developed with the NCAA Technical Advisory Board. They used 589,753 students who graduated in 2017 and took both the ACT (from February 2016) and the redesigned SAT (from March 2016) before June 2017, weighted to look like everyone who takes either test, and matched scores with the same percentile rank. The guide calls them “the only official concordance tables”. ACT’s concordance page says the 2018 version is the latest and “is not updated annually”.

The digital SAT. The SAT moved to a shorter, adaptive digital test (the College Board dates the launch to March 2023). The College Board says the digital SAT is “still scored on a 400–1600 scale” and that two concordance studies before the launch found digital and paper scores comparable: “a score of 1050 on the digital SAT would correspond to and carry the same meaning as a score of 1050 on the paper and pencil SAT.” The digital test calls its first section Reading and Writing rather than Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW).

The 2025 ACT. ACT says that from April 2025 for online testing, and September 2025 for paper and international testing, the ACT is shorter, the science section is the student’s choice, and the Composite is the average of English, math and reading only (science is reported separately when taken). Its published question counts are English 50 in 35 minutes, math 45 in 50 minutes, reading 36 in 40 minutes and science 40 in 40 minutes; the 2018 guide describes an ACT of 215 questions. ACT’s higher-education guidance says it believes “the concordance will hold”, because it is keeping the three-section Composite comparable to the four-section one, and that it will review the tables with the College Board over time. Scores from before September 2025 are not recalculated.

The guide’s limits apply to every number on this page: a concorded score is not a prediction of your score on the other test, it should not be used to convert averages or ranges, decisions should not rest on it alone, and SAT and ACT section scores should never be combined into one superscore.

About This Converter

This converter looks your score up in the official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, the tables the College Board and ACT publish together, in both directions and for all three pairs of scores: SAT Total with ACT Composite, SAT Math with ACT Math, and SAT reading and writing with ACT English + Reading. Every row is transcribed from the official spreadsheet and checked against the PDF guide; nothing is estimated from a formula.

Each answer shows the scores that share it, the typical error band the guide gives, a chart of the whole table and the table itself with your row highlighted. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Colleges set their own rules for how they read either test, so check the admissions pages of the schools you apply to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 1200 SAT on the ACT?

A 1200 SAT Total is a 25 ACT Composite on the official 2018 concordance. SAT scores of 1200, 1210 and 1220 all convert to 25, and the guide says the estimate has a standard error of about 2 ACT points, so 23 to 27 is a fair reading.

What SAT score is the same as a 30 on the ACT?

A 30 ACT Composite corresponds to an SAT Total of 1370, and to the SAT range 1360–1380. The 1370 is the single point the College Board and ACT tell you to use when one number is needed.

Do the 2018 tables still work for the digital SAT?

Yes, according to the College Board. The digital SAT is still scored from 400 to 1600, and the College Board says two concordance studies found digital and paper scores comparable: a 1050 on the digital SAT means the same as a 1050 on paper. ACT says the 2018 tables are the latest and are not updated every year.

Does the 2025 ACT, with science optional, change the conversion?

ACT shortened the test and made science optional from April 2025 online and September 2025 on paper; the Composite is now the average of English, math and reading. ACT says it believes the concordance will hold, because it is keeping the new Composite comparable to the old one, and that it will keep reviewing the tables with the College Board.

Why is the converted score only an estimate?

The tables pair scores that have the same percentile rank among 589,753 students who took both tests. They do not predict your exact score: the guide gives a standard error of about 2.26 ACT points and 79.57 SAT points. It also warns against converting averages or ranges, and against superscoring across the two tests.

How do I use the SAT to ACT Score Converter?

Just type or paste your value. The answer shows up right away — there is no button to press. Change anything and it updates by itself.

Do I need to install or sign up for anything?

Not at all — it runs in the browser with nothing to install and no account. After it loads once, it even works without an internet connection.

Is my information private?

Yes. Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved anywhere.

Common Use Cases

Which score to send

A 1310 SAT converts to a 28 ACT. If your ACT is 27, the SAT is the stronger score to send.

Scholarship cut-offs

A scholarship that asks for a 26 ACT: the matching SAT Total is 1240 (range 1230–1250).

Math placement

An SAT Math of 700 is a 30 on ACT Math (Table B1); an ACT Math 24 is an SAT Math 580.

Comparing with a college

Convert your own score, not the college’s middle-50% range: the guide says not to convert means, medians or ranges.
