Foot to Meter Converter
Convert Foot (ft) to Meter exactly. 1 ft = 0.3048 m. The working is shown, and the value is listed in every length unit at once.
How to Use
- Pick a category: length, mass, volume, temperature, pressure, data storage and so on.
- Pick the units to convert from and to; Swap turns the pair round.
- Type the value. Decimals, fractions such as 3/8 and e-notation such as 6.02e23 all work.
- Read the result, the factor for one unit each way, and the value in the base unit.
- The table lists the same value in every unit of the category; click any number to copy it.
Worked Example
Height: 5 ft 9 in in centimetres. 5 ft 9 in is 69 inches, and an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm. Type 69 with inch → centimeter, or 5.75 with foot → centimeter.
Oven: 180 °C in Fahrenheit. Multiply by 9/5 and add 32: 180 × 9/5 + 32 = 356 °F, which recipes round to 350 °F.
The common mistake: scaling temperatures like lengths. 20 °C is not “twice as warm” as 10 °C, and doubling °F doesn’t double °C, because the scales start at different zeros. A temperature difference of 10 °C is 18 °F, but a temperature of 10 °C is 50 °F.

Where the Units Came From
The metre was defined in France in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator, and the metric system spread with the 1875 Metre Convention. Since 1983 the metre has been the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second, and since 2019 the kilogram has been fixed by the Planck constant rather than a metal cylinder in Paris.
Imperial and US units were tied to metric ones in 1959, when the English-speaking countries agreed on an inch of exactly 2.54 cm and a pound of exactly 0.45359237 kg. Mixing the two systems is still costly: NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 because one team’s software reported thrust in pound-force seconds and another’s expected newton-seconds.

This unit converter covers length, mass, volume, time, speed, area, energy, power, pressure, force, frequency, angle, temperature, data storage, density, fuel economy and cooking. Every factor is the defined value and the arithmetic is done in exact fractions, so terminating answers are exact and repeating ones are flagged. Temperatures use their offsets and L/100 km is handled as the inverse unit it is.
Everything runs in your browser. Any pair can be bookmarked as a link, such as ?category=length&from=foot&to=meter&value=6.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many centimeters are in a foot?
Exactly 30.48. Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so a foot of 12 inches is 30.48 cm and 5 ft is 152.4 cm. The same agreement fixed the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kg.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. 70 °F is (70 − 32) × 5/9 = 21.1 °C, and 98.6 °F is exactly 37 °C. The scales meet at −40, where −40 °F and −40 °C are the same temperature. Temperatures need the offset, so they can’t be converted with a single factor.
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The drive maker counts in decimal terabytes (10¹² bytes), and Windows divides by 1,024³ but labels the result GB. 10¹² ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 931.3, which is properly written 931.3 GiB. Choose the KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB units here for the binary sizes.
How do I turn mpg into L/100 km?
Divide 235.215 by the US mpg: 30 mpg is 7.84 L/100 km. L/100 km is an inverse unit (fuel per distance rather than distance per fuel), so it can’t be found by multiplying, and doubling mpg halves the litres. UK mpg uses the larger imperial gallon, so 30 UK mpg is 9.42 L/100 km.
Are these conversions exact?
Yes, wherever the definition allows. Every factor is the legal definition (1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, 1 psi = 6,894.757 Pa), and the arithmetic uses exact fractions rather than floating point. An answer that repeats, such as 1 ft = 0.333… yd, is marked, and anything involving π (radians) is rounded to 10 significant figures.
How do I use the Foot to Meter Converter?
Simply type or paste your value and read the result, which refreshes the instant you change something. There is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.
Is it free? Does it work without internet?
Yes to both. It is free with no sign-up, and once the page has loaded it keeps working even with no internet.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere — every calculation runs on your own device. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
